How Should You Organize Your Closet?

Within each house, some areas are messier than others. If you have children, inevitably their rooms will become messy with toys, sports equipment, and clothes. With garages, more times than not, we do not organize well. Within the house, though, the messiest room tends to be the closet.
How many times have you opened a closet, only to have something fall out of it, because of how it stuffed? Or maybe you have so many different clothes, that there is not enough room for them all, yet you still attempt to fit them all in within the normal hanger system. There are many reasons that a closet can be messy. We’re going to give you some ideas on how you can reorganize that part of your house. We always look to maintain a clean home.
You Might Need to Declutter
The most common problem we face with organizing is keeping too much stuff within each closet. When we have something that we don’t know what to do with, yet don’t want to get rid of, that object tends to end up being stuffed in a closet. Especially if there is no attic space within the house; even if there is room in a garage, most garages are not temperature controlled like a closet is, so your stuff ends up in the closet. Over time, with more and more things that get shuffled in and out of different rooms, the pile of stuff within a closet just continue to pile up higher and higher.
In order to organize your closet well, you need to declutter. First and foremost, you need to take everything out of your closet, so you can see what you have stored. Then, decide if it is something that you have used over the last two years or not. If you have not used or worn it in the last two years, then you should either hold a garage sale or take the stuff and donate it to somewhere that can use it. Once you have decluttered, you can figure out the best way to store it within a closet, rather than just stuffing it in.
Create an Organization System that Works for You
When you go and visit various hardware stores, you will notice there are plenty of different organization systems. The reason for this is simple; not every style of organizational system works for everyone. If you have a closet to store decorations you only use once annually, you will need a system that offers you adjustable shelves. If you are using it for storing clothes, then you should have a system that allows you to hang clothes.
However, even if you are storing clothes, the best kind of system is one that creates a shelf over where you have the hanger area for your clothes. Not only this, as you can see in the picture, but having a place where you can create shelves in between the hangers allows you to fully utilize the space you have. By having shelves, you can place other things that are important to you, which still need to be in a climate controlled area, but are not just clutter. It gives you the flexibility needed in order to make your closet work for you rather than attempting to make all of your stuff fit into a predetermined space.
How Should You Organize Your Clothes?
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “I don’t have anything to wear.”
Yet, when you look in that same closet, you see more clothes than you can count. The mentality that takes over really indicates, “I don’t have anything new to wear”.
When we buy new clothes, we continue to hold onto the clothes we had before. Clothes do not last for 10+ years, no matter how few times you might wear something. The clothes in your closet will continue to turnover. You have to be aware of how many clothes you have.
Each person has a different style, and what they need clothes for. When you organize your closet, you should set up a specific number of articles of clothing you think you need. This will vary wildly, and that is perfectly fine; the goal is to come up with a number that works for you. You can even subcategorize your clothes by t-shirts, blouses/polo shirts, suits, and another kind of clothing you might have. Whatever that number is, you should stick to that number.
When you buy a new piece of clothing, get rid of an older piece in the same subcategory. This way, you can ensure your closet stays under control with the number of clothes you have at any time. Thus, you’ll never have to utter the phrase, “I don’t have anything to wear”.
Organize Your Closet
Line up all of your shirts by color and see if you have duplicates of one particular color. Organize your clothes up by when you wore it last; once you wash it, hang it at the back of the line. Whichever clothes end up at the front of the closet will be the clothes you do not wear anymore.
When you organize your closet, don’t scare yourself or become overwhelmed by the process. We tell our clients that you don’t have to tackle them all at once. If you can tackle one closet regularly, you’ll get your closets into a state where they are working for you. You can also feel happier about the state of your living space.
