3 Simple Tips to Declutter your Home in 10 Minutes or Less
Ridding your home of unnecessary clutter is a task on everyone’s list, but actually getting around to doing it can be daunting, especially for the chronic procrastinator. But a huge clear-out doesn’t need to be as painful as you think – and it doesn’t need to be done all in one go either. Performing these simple tasks takes less than 10 minutes a day, and will help you transform your home into the minimalistic haven that you’ve always dreamed of.
1. Reorganise one drawer before you go to bed
When you’re waiting for your hair to dry or for the dinner to cook, choose one drawer in your home and reorganise it. Whether this be your underwear drawer or your cutlery rack, remove everything you haven’t worn or used in the last three months, and throw it out. Giving yourself a deadline of less than 10 minutes will make you less inclined to mull over what you want to keep – the key to a minimalist, clutter-free home is to be ruthless! If you simply pick one drawer a day for a ruthless purge, you’ll be amazed at how much stuff you find that you don’t need or want anymore.
2. Empty the freezer of food you don’t want
Everybody knows the struggle of doing the food shopping, coming home and trying to cram their items into the freezer, promising themselves that they’ll take out those lasagne leftovers another day. This is another simple task that can be performed whilst the dinner is cooking – simply work from the top drawer down to the bottom, removing items that you know you’re never going to eat. If you’re unsure, a great rule of thumb is to throw anything that is over three months out of date. If you didn’t want it then, why would you want it now? For a bonus tidying tip, group your frozen items into drawers – leftovers in the top, meat in the middle, ice in the bottom, for example. Your future self will thank you when you’re next debating what to have for dinner.
3. Donate your old clothes to charity
Decluttering your wardrobe is probably one of the tasks you have been avoiding the most, but it’s nowhere near as challenging or as time-consuming as you think, if you break it down with this simple tip. Every time you wear an item of clothing, hang it back up with the coat hanger facing the opposite way. At the end of the month, any item still on its hanger facing the right way, pull out and place in a bag to donate to charity. If you haven’t worn it in a month, you don’t need it!
So there you have it, three simple tasks that can be performed whilst brushing your teeth, running a bath or even cooking your dinner. By doing these every day, you’ll have a cleaner, more minimalist home in no time.
